19-year-old Down woman dies after being found unconscious at foot of stairs

Detectives are now trying to trace the woman’s movements before her death.

A 19-YEAR-OLD woman has died after being found unconscious at a flat in Derry today.

Detective are appealing for information to trace the movements of the woman, who is originally from Down, but who was studying in Derry to become a nurse. Paramedics were called to a flat at Cromore Gardens at 2.30am this morning where they found the woman unconscious at the foot of some stairs. She was taken to Altnagelvin Hospital where she later died.

“We are trying to establish her movements before 2am,” commented Detective Chief Inspector Michael Harvey, who is leading the enquiry. “We know that she was in a nightclub in the city centre with friends. We believe she left the nightclub in a taxi at about 1am.”

He added that police are keeping and open mind as to the circumstances of the young woman’s death. A post mortem will take place tomorrow to determine the cause of death.

The PSNI said a 21-year-old man was arrested earlier today in connection with the incident and he remains in custody this evening at the Antrim serious crime suits.
