OVER 40,000 CIGARETTES with a retail value of almost €19,000 and a potential loss to the Exchequer of €14,500, were seized at Cork Airport on Saturday night.
Officers from Revenue’s Customs Service seized the ‘CK’, ‘Bravo’ and ‘Patria’ brand cigarettes after they were discovered in the baggage of two Northern Irish men.
The pair had arrived in on a flight from Lanzarote.
The men, in their twenties and forties, were arrested by officers and appeared this morning at Cork District Court where Judge Leo Malone remanded them in custody to appear again at Cork District Court on Wednesday.
Revenue says that businesses or members of the public who have any information regarding the smuggling or sale of illegal cigarettes or tobacco, they can contact Revenue in confidence on 1800 295 295.
