5 apps worth downloading this week

Featuring a way to play with real pets, reactive radio and a dog’s dreams.

EACH WEEK, WE highlight five apps that are worth downloading for your smartphone and tablet. There are a lot of apps released on a daily basis, but not all of them are worth paying attention to.

This week features a way to play with real pets, reactive radio and a dog’s dreams.

Petcube
For: iOS
Cost: Free

Dogs and cats are great, right? Well, if you can’t own one, the next best thing is to watch pets live and play with them.

Seriously, you can play laser games with different dogs and cats all over the world (well, those who own a Petcube camera and choose to share it) and it’s more fun than you would think.

To Round
For: iOS, Android
Cost: Free

Task managers are plentiful nowadays, but To Round breaks it down into simple circles for you to remember tasks. Decide which tasks are important by making them bigger than others and mark them off when you’ve finished them.

It’s could probably do with a little bit of polish, but it’s handy if you need something other than a standard list to keep track of things.

Gramma Music
For: iOS
Cost: Free

It’s a new Irish music app, this time from the Dublin-based Gramma Music. Describing itself as ‘reactive radio’, it uses factors like your facial expression, movement, weather and location to pick out the right songs for you to listen to.

While it could do with a little bit of fine-tuning, an innovative approach and interface make it worth a download.

MSQRD
For: iOS, Android
Cost: Free

The face-swapping and special effects app was recently bought by Facebook, but its Android app was released around that time too. Alongside face-swapping, you have the choice of numerous animations to choose from that you can share with friends.

Sure you can do the same on Snapchat, but if you’re not on it and you’re looking for a higher-quality version, it’s a fun one to play around with.

Mimpi Dreams
For: iOS (Android version arriving on 28 March)
Cost: €2.99

As far as platformers go, Mimpi Dreams is a little on the easy side, but that would ignore the many things it gets right.

It’s lovely to look at, has a nice soundtrack, and it’s just a pleasant experience overall. One for both younger and older players alike.
