1. #WOMEN’S DAY: Happy Women’s Day! Figures show that more women are taking up company directorships since the start of the recession and the majority of them are called Mary. Most of the female directors are in their 40s and 50s – only 4 per cent are in their 20s – and are more likely to operate in the professional, social and personal services,
2. #CHRISTINE LEGARDE: Christine Lagarde was in town today and has said that the IMF has an “open mind” on the idea of Ireland delaying repayment of its bailout loans. However there was no question of extending the 2015 deadline for bringing the Irish budget deficit within European limits.
3. #TOLLS: Unpaid M50 tolls totalling €3.3 million were written off in 2012, documents released to the Public Accounts Committee have revealed. The figures revealed that Irish vehicles accounted for 57 per cent of the non-payments, with a further 28 per cent from Northern Ireland. The remaining 15 per cent of vehicles had been registered internationally.
4. #ROADS: Transport Minister Leo Varadkar has announced that €40 million will be reallocated within local authorities in order to help fix Ireland’s roads. Varadkar said he believed that there was a “real and growing problem with local roads” and this has been made known to his department on numerous occasions.
5. #PINTS: New research has suggested that the average Irish person drank the equivalent of 411 pints of beer last year, new research has suggested. Figures published by the Drinks Industry Group of Ireland (DIGI) based on data sourced from the Revenue Commissioners, suggests that the average adult imbibed 11.681 litres of pure alcohol in 2012.
