1. #LEAVING CERT: The results are out as some 55,781 students in Ireland collected their Leaving Certificate grades today. Almost 11,000 students will gain 25 extra college application points when the first round of offers is distributed on Monday thanks to a bonus points initiative for students taking Higher-Level Maths. Some of the less mainstream subjects like Ancient Greek and Slovakian saw students achieving top grades while others like Classical Studies had a high failure rate.
2. #ISPCC: More than half of the ISPCC’s staff take unpaid leave in a bid to cut spending. The charity said it is €500,000 behind target this year despite redundancies and salary cuts across the board. A spokesperson said the level of work the charity does has been reduced as donations from the public and corporate support dropped in the last few years.
3. #WET WET WET: Met Éireann issued a weather warning today as a storm rushed in to confirm that we’re simply not having a summer this year. Drivers are warned to be extra cautious as heavy rain and gale force winds surged from the south of the country to cover almost every single county over the course of the day.
4. #PIRACY: A man in the UK has been jailed for four years for creating the website surfthechannel.com which linked to illegal versions of TV programmes and films. Anton Vickerman was convicted on two counts of conspiracy to defraud for the site that was once among the top 500 websites visited globally.
5. #HOMECOMING: Some 5,000 supporters braved the storm this afternoon to welcome Ireland’s Olympians home from London. A large stage was erected in Dublin’s Dawson Street to host the special reception which paid tribute to the 66 athletes, their coaches and back room staff.
