GOOD EVENING

The 5 at 5 5 minutes, 5 stories, 5 o’clock…

EACH WEEKDAY EVENING, TheJournal.ie brings you the five stories you need to know before you head out the door.

1. #WATER CHARGES Don’t intend paying the water charges? Well, Environment Minister Phil Hogan says that your water pressure will be “turned down to a trickle” in that case. The average household will pay €240 a year for water – and here’s what your water allowance of 30,000 litres will get you.

2. #LOCAL ELECTIONS Mary Hanafin ignored her party Fianna Fáil’s rules when nominating herself to run for the local elections in Blackrock. That’s according to party leader Micheál Martin, who said that her actions will now be investigated.

3. #WHISTLEBLOWERS Gardaí will be covered by new whistleblower legislation, the Protected Disclosures Bill. It will give members of the force the same rights as any other worker, including access to the Labour Court if they feel they were punished for making a disclosure.

4. #THE TROUBLES Gerry Adams says he did not make a threat against Jean McConville’s son Michael that he would unleash a ‘backlash’ if he released the names of the people he believes were involved in his mother’s murder.

5. #INVESTIGATION An investigation has been launched after a baby died in Cavan General Hospital on 26 April. The hospital has extended its deepest sympathy to the family, while management have also met with the parents.
