1. #REVOKED: The bail of convicted rapist Patrick O’Brien was revoked today. He had been sentenced by Mr Justice Paul Carney earlier this week to 12 years in jail, nine of which had been suspended. Today the judge said that his sentencing had been “inappropriate”. The Minister for Justice Alan Shatter said that he understood why people “were disturbed” by the details of the case.
2. #DOLOURS PRICE: The convicted IRA car bomber Dolours Price has died. She gave a number of interviews to Boston College in the US, in which she alleged that Sinn Féin leader Gerry Adams had been a commander in the IRA. The interviews were conducted on the condition that they would not be released until her death. When asked about this earlier today, Adams said that he had “no concerns about any of those issues because they are not true.”
3. #CLOVERHILL: A report into the death of prisoner Shane Rogers in a Dublin courthouse has found multiple failings and mistakes by authorities.
4. #DRINK DRIVING: The Minister for Justice Alan Shatter has called the proposals to allow people in Kerry to be allowed drive after drinking multiple units of alcohol “grossly irresponsible”. He said measures being taken to reduce road fatalities “should not and cannot be contradicted by individuals seeking self political promotion [sic].”
5. #DAVOS: Taoiseach Enda Kenny today told the World Economic Forum that Ireland had been “through a hurricane” in its struggle to deal with the European debt crisis.
