EACH WEEKDAY EVENING, TheJournal.ie brings you five things you need to know before you head out the door.
1. #RIGHT TO DIE: In a landmark case, the High Court has ruled against a multiple sclerosis sufferer who had attempted to challenge Ireland’s suicide laws in order to allow her husband to assist her in ending her own life without fear of prosecution. Marie Fleming’s case could now go to the Supreme Court.
2. #ABORTION: An Oireachtas committee is continuing to hear evidence on legislating for the X Case ruling on abortion with religious and advocacy groups expressing their different views today. While the Catholic Church came out firmly against legislation for X, other religious groups welcomed the government’s decision. We’ve been liveblogging proceedings as they’ve been happening, while a poll out today has found 64 per cent of people in Ireland are in favour of legislating for X.
3. #HSE: The Health Service Executive has published its national service plan for this year with €721 million in cuts to be made from its budget. Staff reductions, cuts to the cost of providing primary care and changes to the eligibility for medical cards are among the plans for 2013.
4. #NEW MONEY: There is a new €5 note on the way with the European Central Bank today unveiling images of the new note that will come into circulation from 2 May this year. The new notes will feature the likeness of Europa, a Greek mythological figure.
5. #OSCARS: Finally, the Oscar nominations were out today with the upcoming epic Lincoln grabbing the headlines with 12 nominations but a worthy mention too for the Armagh cinematographer Seamus McGarvey who was nominated for his work on Anna Karenina and the Kerry animator Fodhla Cronin O’Reilly nominated for the short Head over Heels.
