GOOD EVENING

The 5 at 5 5 minutes, 5 stories, 5 o’clock…

EVERY WEEKDAY EVENING, TheJournal.ie brings you the five stories you need to know before you head out the door.

1.#BREAK IN THE WEATHER: The bad news first: more rain is on the way. The good news is that it will be less severe than yesterday and may, just may, signal the break in the storms that we’ve all been waiting for. So says Met Éireann’s Evelyn Cusack, anyway.

2.#STUBBED OUT: A group of cigarette company executives today appeared before the Oireachtas Health Committee, where they were told they represent an “illness industry” and that it “is payback time”.

3.#WHISTLEBLOWER: The Public Accounts Committee (PAC) are to be allowed listen to the private session evidence of Garda whistleblower Maurice McCabe. The members are also going to ask the Dáil’s Committee on Procedures and Practices if they can release the transcript of the evidence.

4.#NOT GUILTY: Former BBC DJ Dave Lee Travis has been cleared of a number of charges of indecent assault. The Radio 1 presenter had pleaded not guilty to all 14 counts which referred to alleged incidents between 1976 and 2006. The jury failed to return verdicts on two counts.

5.#AIRBRUSHING: Dublin MEP Nessa Childers has hit back at an Irish Mirror report that said her election posters have been retouched. Childers is a staunch opponent of the practice and said that judging women in politics on their looks was counter-productive.
