7 invaluable tips for eye care that everyone should know

You use them all day every day – now find out how to look after them.

YOUR EYES ARE the windows to your soul and taking care of them should be of the utmost importance.

Whether you’re a glasses wearer or not, there are plenty of ways you could be hurting your eyes just by going about your day to day business.

We’ve rounded up seven of the best tips out there for keeping your eyes as healthy as possible.

1. Blink (or you’ll miss it)

Sitting at a computer for eight hours a day and then going back online, watching television or being on your phone at home, all have a negative effect on your eyes. You blink less when you are looking at  a screen so tip number one is to remember to blink more. Blinking lubricates the eyes and prevents dryness and irritation. Try to look away from the screen at intervals and blink 10 times in a row.

2. Eat for your eyes

A good diet is obviously essential for your overall health and wellbeing but you can eat to help your eyes specifically. It’s not just carrots that help your eye sight –  dark green leafy vegetables, fish, nuts, and dark-coloured berries all contain essential nutrients and antioxidants that will do wonders for your eyes.

3. Go to the doctor

It’s important to get regular check ups, and equally so to get regular eye check ups. Not only can they see if your vision has detriorated but they can check for conditions like macular degeneration and glaucoma. You should aim to have one once a year – and remember if you wear contacts to get that prescription checked too.

4. Replace your contact lens case every two to three months

Your contacts are applied directly to your eye so it’s really important to maintain the hightest of hygiene standards – and that includes the case you carry them around in. Cases can be washed in the dishwasher to sterilise them, but ideally you should just replace the case every 2-3 months. It’s not worth the risk of contaminating a lens or giving yourself an eye infection.

5. 20:20:20

Another one for the computer users – using them puts such a strain on your eyes, we had to include an extra tip. Rest your eyes every 20 minutes by looking 20 feet away for 20 seconds. It’s simple and efficient and if you have trouble remembering to do it, set a reminder on your phone to alert you with a gentle ping.

6. Sunscreen for the eyes

Not ‘sunscreen’ exactly – but the right shades can help protect your eyes from more than just the glare. Too much sunlight can lead to cataracts and macular degeneration, and nobody wants that. You need shades that will block out 99 – 100% UVA and UVB rays to give your eyes the best protection from UV rays.

7. Rest your eyes

Sleeping is great for resting your eyes, but sometimes it’s not enough. It’s important to remember to rest your eyes as much as possible during the day too. Even closing your eyes for 30 seconds to a minute can help to rest them and the more ‘mini-rests’ you take during the day the more rested your eyes will feel.
