7 things you can always depend on in Ireland

Rain or shine (and it’s mostly rain) there are some things we know will always happen in Ireland.

IRELAND IS A very dependable place. Oh yes.

From the dreadful weather to the complaining about the dreadful weather, there are certain things you can just count on happening when you live in Ireland.

But it’s not all doom and gloom, you know. We’re pretty universally loved around the world* and with all the rain, at least it’s always green, right?

Anyway, we’ve rounded up seven things you can always depend on in Ireland – let us know if we’ve missed any in the comments below.

*Not yet scientifically proven.

1. It’ll rain…

Giphy Giphy

If there’s one thing you can, eh, rely on in Ireland it’s that it will rain. Hard. And a lot.

Almost all of the time.

And people will complain about it. Vocally.

Which leads us to…

2. People are always talking about the weather…

Giphy Giphy

And by ‘weather’ we mean ‘rain’, 90% of the time.

If there’s one thing Irish people do more than talk about the weather, well, we’re just not sure what it is.

You’d think we’d get bored of it, but no – every day is like a brand new surprise.

From, ‘Oh, my God it’s May, where is the sun?!’ to ‘November (December, January, February…) is so depressing…’ we never seem to be happy with the weather.

Even if the sun eventually does peer its face around for a day or two, it’s all ‘It’s so hot/sticky/gross’. No wonder its never around.

You’ve no one to blame but yourselves, people.

3. You’ll be offered tea

No matter where you go, or what time, whenever you land in someone’s house you’ll be offered a cup of tea.

Don’t try saying no, they’ll be having none of that. Just accept the inevitable and say ‘thank you’ like your mammy taught you.

And may God have mercy on your soul if you don’t drink tea.

Speaking of ‘Go on, go on, go on…’

4. There’s a Father Ted quote for everything

Giphy Giphy

Doesn’t matter that it’s now been off the air for seventeen years, Father Ted will always be near to our hearts.

From ‘Down with that sort of thing… Careful now..’ to singing ‘My lovely horse…’ you know you can’t get through too many conversations without some reference to Father Ted cropping up.

And rightly so.

5. An Irish breakfast beats all other breakfasts

It doesn’t matter what day of the week it is – an Irish breakfast will always be a winner.

While there’s often debate about what has or hasn’t earned its place on the plate, you can’t go too far wrong with the old favourites – rashers, sausages, black pudding, toast and beans.

You can get even fancier with some grilled tomatoes, hash browns or sautéed potatoes if you’re so inclined, but we all know you don’t need to.

6. Everyone’s in a good mood

Giphy Giphy

Absolutely everyone. A little sun shines and the whole country gets a shot of serotonin in the arm.

There are smiles all around and you can’t get near any pub with a beer garden for love or money.

But that’s ok, cos everyone’s just so happy.

7. You will invariably have the craic

Giphy Giphy

No matter where we are, or who we’re with, we’re renowned for having a good time – and everyone wants to be Irish.

It doesn’t matter that nobody outside the country really understands what ‘having the craic’ means, you’ll show them by example.

Do us proud.

We’re all depending on you.
