1. #RIP: Legendary singer songwriter Leonard Cohen has died aged 82. “We have lost one of music’s most revered and prolific visionaries,” a statement on his official Facebook page said.

2. #TRIBUTES: President Michael D Higgins has been leading Irish tributes to the singer. He said in a statement: “He was deeply influenced by William Butler Yeats and he made a very warm connection with his Irish audiences – a fact that he valued and emphasised to me when I met him in Dublin.”

3. #TRUMP: For a second night, thousands of demonstrators have taken to the streets of the US to protest the election of Donald Trump to the White House. Trump, commenting on the unrest for the first time, blamed the news media.

4. #ENDA: How did Enda Kenny manage to become the first EU leader to speak to the new President-elect? The call was arranged through associates of former New York mayor Rudy Giuliani, Simon Carswell reports in this morning’s Irish Times.

5. #ATTACKS: Authorities at two universities in California have said police are investigating reports of attacks against female Muslim students, one of which was described as a hate crime. Both attacks allegedly happened on Wednesday, the day after Donald Trump was elected.

6. #CALAIS: Ireland will be accepting up to 200 unaccompanied child refugees who had been previously living in the French Calais refugee camp, it was agreed in the Dáil last evening.

7. #SINGLES DAY: Alibaba, the e-commerce giant, looks likely to smash the sales record for its ‘Singles Day’ event, the BBC reports. The day, originally a celebration for China’s young singletons, was turned into a shopping event in 2009.

8. #HOPKINS: RTÉ has already received over 600 emails complaining about the decision to invite Katie Hopkins on The Late Late Show tonight.

9. #THE OUTLOOK: The weather forecast for today isn’t fantastic. It will start out dry but heavy, thundery showers are expected this afternoon.
