1. #MORTGAGES: Foreign-owned mortgages providers who bought bad loans from Irish lenders have started to offer massive write-downs to investors, the Irish Independent reports. The majority of these deals are being offered to people who have mortgages on more than one property.
2. #HOMELESS: The body of a homeless disabled man has been found in the grounds of Ennis Golf Club, where he had been sleeping for a number of nights, The Irish Times reports. The man was on bail in connection to a conviction for setting fire to a nursing home and it is believed he may have died from a drug overdose.
3. #IBIZA: An Irish man has told TheJournal.ie that he was offered €10,000 while on holiday in Ibiza to transport cocaine to Benalmedena. Police in Ibiza, however, have said they do not think that drug trafficking is a major problem there.
4. #PERU: Michaella McCollum Connolly has given the Irish Daily Mail an account of her kidnap by a Columbian drug gang. The 20-year-old said that both she and Melissa Reid from Glasgow were tricked by the same man, kept hostage by the gang and threatened with guns.
5. #HIV: A new study has found that 42 children in Ireland have been diagnosed with HIV over the last ten years. The research raised concerns that many of the children were diagnosed when the virus was at an advanced stage.
6. #SEVERANCE: The outgoing county manager of Sligo will receive a €270,000 severance package as well as €68,000 in pension payments. A local councillor described the payment as “unacceptable”, though the council said his package is “no more nor no less than any public servant is entitled to under the rules”.
7. #EGYPT: Egyptian security forces have surrounded a mosque in Cairo full of supporters of ousted president Mohamed Morsi, AFP reports. One protester said that nearly 1,000 people are trapped inside the mosque which had earlier held the bodies of more than 20 people killed in yesterday’s clashes.
8. #PHILIPPINES: At least 26 people have died and hundreds are missing after a ferry off the Philippines collided with another vessel and sank, BBC reports. The ship was carrying over 850 people including passengers and crew and is said to have sunk within 30 minutes of the collision.
9. #HANGOVER: If you’re feeling a bit worse for the wear this morning, this might perk you up. Researchers in Australia have invented a beer that actually hydrates you as you drink it, the Irish Examiner reports.
