GOOD MORNING

The 9 at 9 Good morning. Here are the nine stories you need to know as you start your day.

EVERY MORNING, TheJournal.ie brings you the nine stories you need to know as you kick off your day.

1. #REFUGE: A refuge for women and children affected by domestic violence is still lying unused – almost one year after TheJournal.ie revealed that despite its completion in 2011, it had never opened. The Teach Tearmainn refuge requires six staff in order to for it to be able to open and be operated in a safe manner.

2. #NICOLA FURLONG: The man accused of murdering Nicola Furlong, Richard Hinds, has taken to the stand. RTÉ News is reporting that Hinds said that he had, at Furlong’s request, placed his hands over her throat for a period of 30 seconds. Police reports show that he had previously said that he placed his hands over her throat for two to three minutes. Hinds said that police have altered his evidence.

3. #WEATHER: Met Éireann has issued a weather warning to 12 counties across the country. Snow and ice is expected in Dublin, Carlow, Kildare, Kilkenny, Laois, Louth, Wexford, Wicklow, Meath, Donegal, Mayo, Cork, Kerry, Tipperary and Waterford.

4. #ROADS: A 27-year-old man has died in a serious road collision in county Kerry. The incident occurred on the N22 at Dunrine, near Killarney, at 11.45pm yesterday. Although reopened, the N22 Killarney to Tralee Road is down to one lane at Lawlor’s Cross near Coolnagarrehy.

5. #MAGDALENES: The survivor advocacy group, Justice for Magdalenes, has made a submission to the UN Committee Against Torture (UNCAT) regarding the Irish government’s recent apology and the initial steps regarding compensation. The news comes ahead of their meeting this Wednesday with Justice Quirke, who has been tasked with making recommendations on payments and supports.

6. #LONDON: Taoiseach Enda Kenny is to meet British Prime Minister David Cameron in London today. It is believed that Kenny will discuss Ireland’s priorities for the remainder of its EU presidency. The event marks the beginning of the Irish government’s diplomatic promotions for St Patrick’s Day.

7. #INDIA: Police in India have said that the man who was believed to have driven the New Delhi bus on which a woman was raped and later died has taken his own life. His lawyer and family are alleging that he was killed, however. Ram Singh was under suicide watch at New Delhi’s Tihar Jail when he was found dead.

8. #FUEL POVERTY: A two-day conference on fuel poverty is taking place in Dublin. RTÉ News is reporting that more than 30,000 die each winter in Europe due to fuel poverty, with Ireland experiencing a disproportionate number of winter deaths.

9. #RELIGION: Less than half of primary school teachers have said that they teach religion “willingly”. The INTO survey also found that more than 70 per cent of respondents said that preparation for events such as First Holy Communion and Confirmation took more time than had been allocated.
