EVERY MORNING, TheJournal.ie brings you the stories you need to know as you start your day.

1. #LANDFALL: Hurricane Irma has made landfall in Cuba as a maximum-strength Category Five after leaving a trail of death and destruction on a string of Caribbean islands. About 5.6 million people in Florida have been ordered to leave their homes.

2. #MEXICO: The death toll from the Mexican earthquake has reached 61. Three days of national mourning have been declared.

3. #RIP: Country music’s ‘Gentle Giant’ Don Williams has died. Known for his laidback style, the singer often often walked onstage carrying a cup of coffee, sat on a barstool, sang and chatted amiably with the audience. Stars like Rosanne Cash have been paying tribute.

4. #WIND WARNING: Forecasters at Met Éireann have issued a wind warning for the west coast. It kicks in tomorrow evening, and will be in place until Monday morning.

5. #HAND IT BACK: A number of Dublin City Councillors have said they believe Myanmar’s leader and Nobel Peace Prize winner Aung San Suu Kyi should have the Freedom of Dublin award rescinded.

6. #CREDENTIALED: Ireland’s new Ambassador to the US has presented his credentials to President Donald Trump, RTÉ reports. Ambassador Dan Mulhall is said to have discussed a range of issues with the President, including St Patrick’s Day and the Irish undocumented.

7. #MAY’S WOES: A leading Tory donor has described Theresa May as “hopeless” and the leader of a weak government, the Guardian reports. May is continuing to face speculation about her future as Tory leader.

8. #RADIOACTIVE: Gardaí have yet to find radioactive materials which were stolen in Dublin four years ago. The seven lightning preventers, which were taken from a unit in Swords, were described by the gardaí at the time as “highly dangerous”.

9. #CULTURE NIGHT: Finally, we took a busload of TheJournal.ie readers on a Culture Night preview bus tour of Cork city during the week. Here’s what happened.
