1.#FORT HOOD A gunman took his own life after killing three people and wounding 16 at US army base Fort Hood last night. The man was said to have ‘mental health issues’. He had served in Iraq and was being checked for possible post-traumatic stress disorder.

2. #TV3 Broadcaster TV3 has offered all of its staff voluntary redundancy, the Irish Sun says this morning. It says that two senior executives had already tendered their resignation last week. However, the station denies that story.

3. #REHAB Angela Kerin’s pension details won’t be revealed by the organisation Rehab, the Herald says. The PAC is due to discuss her retirement at its meeting this morning, after she quit as Rehab CEO yesterday.

4. #RACING One young woman and seven young men have been arrested and charged by gardaí investigating nighttime unofficial modified car events in Co Clare. One event involved 70 vehicles which travelled from the Cliffs of Moher to Ballyvaughan.

5. #INSOLVENCY Just four deals out of 320 applications have been completed by the Insolvency Service so far. It is currently dealing with 500 cases, and its director Lorcan O’Connor accepted that the uptake of the scheme was slow.

6. #CHILE An aftershock has hit Chile after yesterday’s 8.2 earthquake, triggering a tsunami warning. The 7.6 aftershock did not lead to any deaths or major damage, but did force people to evacuate from some coastal areas.

7. #PAKISTAN The former military ruler of Pakistan, Pervez Musharraf, escaped an assassination attempt when a bomb went off this morning as his convoy was due to pass by. The device was planted under a bridge.

8. #SYRIA There are now more than one million Syrian refugees in Lebanon, according to the UNHCR. The UN refugee agency described this as “a devastating milestone” and said that Lebanon is “struggling to keep pace”.

9. #SPACE A new series of earth monitoring satellites is due to be launched into orbit today by the European Space Agency. They’re part of a multi-billion euro Copernicus project and will collect data to find out what’s happening all over the planet.
