Man charged with tricking girlfriend into having abortion

The Norwegian man has been charged with twice having his former partner ingest a mixture of abortion drugs.

NORWEGIAN PROSECUTORS said today they were seeking a seven-year sentence for a man accused of slipping abortion pills into his ex-girlfriend’s smoothie.

The man is charged with twice having his former partner ingest a mixture of abortion drugs he had purchased on the internet.

After his second attempt, in March last year, the 20-year-old woman lost the baby in her 12th week of pregnancy.

“He tried several times to convince me to have an abortion but it was not an option for me,” the woman testified in the western city of Trondheim, according to reports by public broadcaster NRK.

The man was charged with inflicting serious bodily harm and, under a rare part of the criminal code, for having terminated a pregnancy without the mother’s consent.

He pleaded guilty on both counts.

“He imported these substances. All of it was precisely and cynically planned,” prosecutor Kaja Strandfjord was quoted as saying by local paper Adresseavisen.

The man’s lawyer appealed for leniency.

“It’s totally wrong with a sentence of seven years, especially considering that he has confessed and has custody over a child from before,” his lawyer Tore Angen told Adresseavisen.

After failing the first time, the man ground the pills and mixed them into a smoothie. He explained in court that he wanted to be sure to terminate the pregnancy after reading that the foetus might otherwise suffer deformations.

“I felt guilt and remorse, but I thought it was the only possible outcome,” he told the court, according to NRK.

After the incident, the woman saw a doctor who prescribed a test to see how she had lost her baby.
