A CROSS-PARTY GROUP of pro-life politicians have written a memo, seen by TheJournal.ie, to every member of the Oireachtas, telling them it is almost inevitable that legislation for abortion will lead to a dramatic increase in the number of abortions.

The group, featuring 10 members of the Oireachtas, two MLAs from the Northern Ireland Assembly, and one Northern Irish MP, says no country has introduced any laws allowing abortion and been able to limit the procedure to limited cases.

It comes as the Government finalises draft legislation which will legally permit abortion in certain circumstances.

The legislation follows the European Court of Human Rights’ ruling in 2010 in the A, B and C case – where it was ruled that Ireland’s failure to clarify the circumstances in which an abortion could be carried out.
