AN AER LINGUS flight to Boston had to turn around and return to Dublin airport shortly after takeoff due to technical problems today.

A spokesperson from Aer Lingus said that flight EI 137 departed Dublin for Boston at 2.10pm today.

The aircraft returned to Dublin and landed at 3.45pm as a  technical problem was detected shortly after take-off.

The aircraft was inspected by engineering staff and returned to service, and the flight departed at 5.05pm.

There were 258 passengers on board the flight, as well as 10 crew members.

  • There’s a slight difference between a technical problem in the air and one on the ground! I’m sure the passengers & crew had no objections about turning around for a safety check

  • Majella, Aer Lingus carry out all the required maintenance and have one of the best records.
I think what a few people are trying to get across here is that this is probably a complete non event. Does the author even know why pilots decided to return to their main base of DUB with all their maintenance on hand? We have no idea what happened! Could just have been a warning light and pilots preferred to return.
It’s these sort of articles with no information whatsoever that make people nervous flying! This article is pointless. Something happened on a flight, probably not even an emergency, worst that happened was passengers had to take off twice and about a 3 hour delay.
I saw a train stopped today for 20 minutes, why not write an article on that?

  • Right, yeah just pull over to the nearest cloud for repairs!…doesn’t even compare to bus problems FFS

  • Stephen, you don’t understand the first iota of aviation safety rules. It isn’t, despite the French company name, a bus at all. It’s different. Son, its wheels leave the ground.

  • Also Abdul, any time I was on a flight (and I’ve been on a few scary ones) I never thought it was in the least like a bus!

  • Still…..better to be safe than sorry, and not in hind site say, if only they had …..

I live in Boston and travel this route many many times a year. I’m glad to know that the authorities involved take all the precautions necessary.

  • Amazing, while not confirmed an aviation source online is reporting this flight returned as a medical diversion (ie a sick person on board)! That would explain why it’s not appearing on avherald which is quick at reporting such technical incidents (when they actually occur)

  • Saw Doctors flew into Boston today. Looking forward to seeing them in NYC St Pats weekend.

  • in fairness, this really is no big deal. Have a look on this website: http://avherald.com/, and you’ll see that this kind of thing happens in the aviation industry literally every day of the year..

  • well there wouldn’t be a fear of me continuing on that flight after having to return for the plane to be checked!

  • If the fault was “shortly after takeoff” then it is probably newsworthy and maybe those people were very lucky.

  • You should do a story every time Bus Eireann have a technical fault half hour down the road and have to return back as a result of it. that would be very newsworthy like this amazing story.

  • Incidents like this can be terrifying for passengers. safety should never be compromised. Aer Lingus should do more thorough technical research prior to take off

    • How dare you to suggest Aer Lingus dont carry out as you put ‘technical research’ before each flight. You havent a clue.

    • So what exactly, should Aer Lingus be reprimanded in some way? Should Aer Lingus’ operating license be rescinded on foot of this incident for “not doing more thorough checks on the ground” as you put it? In that case, I don;t think we’d have any airlines left. Aer Lingus have one of the best safety records in the business. In any case, in the western world, aviation safety standards have never been higher, airlines are not allowed operate unless they have extremely high standards. Whats more, Aer Lingus have one of the youngest and most modern fleets in operation too. Not that this maters, with proper maintenance, a jet airliner can operate safely for up to 25 years. To put this into perspective, Aer Lingus’ fleets average age is about 7 years. At this point, the most dangerous part of a trip abroad is the drive to the airport

    • Fact all Aer Lingus wide body aircraft get checked by engineers before and after transatlantic flights, The flight crew would also do a walk around check before the flight.
what might have happened is a sensor light came on just after take off and the crew took precautions and returned to Dublin for futher investigation.

  • I flew with are lingus from Dublin to Naples and we stopped at Rome for an emergency they said there was a problem with the radar but then they said the truth that the plane didnt have enough fuel to fly to Naples for another half an hour so we stopped at Rome airport for around 40min and we were late with the flight because we needed to wait till enough fuel was in the airplane…I freaked myself because the plane needed to take f again from Rome to Naples.. and this Christmas again there was a problem again we waited on the plane for around 20min before the plane took off it was so,etching technical problem…but the flight back was good and they apologised and gave back our flight ticket money for rome to Naples, only to people who were clever enough to ask
