Aer Lingus passenger numbers down 5 per cent in November

The company had signalled the drop in passengers last month, with long haul passenger numbers dropping 6.9 per cent.

BOTH LONG AND short haul passenger numbers fell for Aer Lingus last month, the airline has announced.

Overall numbers at the airline and Aer Lingus Regional decreased by 5 per cent to 728,000 in November 2013 compared to November 2012.

Short haul passengers last month were 647,000, a decrease of 4.7 per cent on the same time last year. Long haul numbers in November were 81,000, a decrease of 6.9 per cent on November 2012.

While the drop is substantial, the are in line with expectations.

In their third quarter interim management statement, released last month, the airline said it expected passenger decreases at the end of the year.

“We do not expect any improvement in the short haul environment for the rest of 2013 which remains characterised by heavily discounted fare offerings across Europe. The 2013 outlook on long haul remains positive with the exception of some weakness expected in November,” said the statement.
