The Morning Ireland presenter made a surprise return to the airwaves yesterday morning, and will chat with Miriam O’Callaghan on her show tonight.

MORNING IRELAND PRESENTER Aine Lawlor will be back on the air for the second time this week when she appears on Saturday Night with Miriam tonight.

Last October the broadcaster announced that she would be taking time off from the morning current affairs show to undergo medical treatment for breast cancer.

In March her colleague Cathal Mac Coille said that Lawlor hoped to return to her regular slot by the end of the year, but she’s returned much sooner than that, surprising listeners by getting back to work yesterday.

She had been scheduled to return on Monday, but decided to come back a day early without causing any fuss.

Her name trended on Twitter for a time yesterday as well wishers welcomed her back to Morning Ireland, including colleague Des Cahill:

Lawlor will discuss her battle with breast cancer with Miriam O’Callaghan. She made a brief return to RTÉ last month to present some of the coverage of the Bloom event in the Phoenix Park.

  • Fair play to her . If it increases awareness and her being well known can only help. As 4 green monkey ..there’s always one.

  • I don’t listen to her, but sincerely wish her well, I’ve been down that road and it’s not a journey anybody wants to make believe me. Talk and awareness is what’s its about, it saves lives! So shut up first post.

  • I like Aine but can’t stand Miriam.
    ‘Good evening and Walcome’
and her stupid sideways girlie look and her stupid super mum interviews about how it pains her to leave her children (all 16 of them) to go to work.
er….. Make a choice Miriam or shut up.
And the guests? Jeez. Does she just walk down the RTE corridor knocking on doors?
You know the typical guest list…
    Larry Gogan
    Amanda Brunker
    Daniel O’Donnell
    Pat Shortt
    Mike Murphy

    Arghhhhhhhh!
I hate these stupid Irish shows like Brendan O’Connor and his greasy head.

    We want guests…
    We want
    John Cleese
    Anthony Hopkins
    Carla Bruni
not sh1te presented as entrainment where it’s like Tues morning in the RTE canteen.

  • There’s some strange people out there, red thumbing well wishes to someone recovering from cancer!

  • Delighted that she is speaking about it – however it is not the only cancer that women can get – lots of women get lung cancer but that is not spoken about – we could do with more awareness of that.

  • Perverse, not strange. Where is their humanity?

Seems that someone is ‘disliking’ the positive comments as they appear – see the ‘sixes and sevens’ in the totals! A one-man band? Could not possibly be a woman?

I don’t accept that there are as many individual begrudgers out there in relation to this traumatic subject.

  • Was her getting breast cancer any more important than the thousands of other women who suffer from cancer and we don’t hear about. Being part of the Montrose circle should not mean her story should be heard above anyone else’s ……….. You heard me

    • Not more important, but just as important.

I was absolutely delighted to unexpectedly hear her voice on Friday morning, and am equally delighted (as someone who has recovered from breast cancer) to have her voice those heard on the issue of cancer.

I presume the reason she will speak about it is to help other women who are going through the same…..it’s not something most women would like to have to discuss openly in front of the whole country !!

    • The point is, Green Monkey, that what she’s done is gone off from work for a year, undergone the harsh reality and challenging treatment of breast cancer, and come back fighting after only a year.

She’s shown such courage in talking about her cancer, and not letting it take away from her praised broadcasting.

Being a presenter of the most listened to radio programme in the country, and willing to divulge so much personal trauma to hundreds of thousands of people tonight, shows great bravery.

The Irish Cancer Society says on their website 25,000 women contact them every year with worries. With Aine going public like that, maybe that number can be increased, making more people aware of the symptoms and early diagnosis, hopefully reducing the mortality rate of cancer.

As a comment on Independent.ie says, she’s one of the few in RTE without an ego.

    • Mean-spirited Monkey! What’s your story?

Would you prefer not to hear any woman’s story, at all? Just for a perverse sense of ‘balance?’

I for one want to hear Áine’s story. That doesn’t mean that other sufferers’ stories are unimportant to me! But how can I possibly hear all of them? I am sure that many will be similar to Áine’s story, and will help to shed light on what women suffer in rthe fight against cancer.

For the record, I regard Áine Lawlor as a true professional – a brave person, and not just a member of any imaginary or privileged ‘circle.’

It’s a pity we heard you, and your small-mindedness!
