The Irish Air Corps assisted the Coast Guard in today’s operation.

AN INJURED FISHERMAN has been airlifted from a fishing vessel off the coast of County Cork.

The Irish Air Corps successfully carried out the medical evacuation approximately 200 miles south west of Mizen Head.

Rescue

The Air Corps said it was scrambled at 1pm this afternoon in response to a request from the Coast Guard to provide assistance for the winching operation.

The maritime patrol aircraft reached the scene 35 minutes after receiving the request.

The Air Corps crew assisted the helicopter and 30 minutes was spent winching the casualty to safety.

The patient was taken from Cork airport to the nearest hospital.

The crew landed back in Casement Aerodrome at 6.30pm and said it will remain on standby for the rest of the night.
