Alan Shatter tells Israel: Ireland is still your friend

The Minister for Justice also told an Israeli newspaper that he had been the target of some anti-Semitism during his time in politics but that it had been “extremely rare”.

MINISTER FOR JUSTICE Alan Shatter has told Israel that Ireland remains a friend of country and that “a great deal more can be done”.

He also said he had he been the target of some anti-Semitism during his time in Irish politics but it had been “extremely rare”.

In an interview with the Jerusalem Post conducted during his visit to the Middle East for Patrick’s Day, Minister Shatter said Israel should make the distinction between non-governmental organisations making comments about Israel and what the government actually says.

The Fine Gael-Labour coalition has taken a “balanced approach to the Palestinian issue,” he told the paper.

Ireland has supported Palestinian calls for full statehood and has repeatedly urged both sides to restart talks on bringing peace to the region.

The Justice Minister is visiting Lebanon, Israel and Palestine as part of the government’s outreach programme to promote Ireland’s trade and tourism abroad around Patrick’s Day.
