I live in Sydney and the Chinese are buying vast farms here to to feed their own people, indeed land for food will be the worlds most valuable asset and the Chinese will have it! and there are no laws here in Australia to stop this land buying by foreign investors.

There’s a good chance they will. China is buying up vast amounts if land in many African countries and using it as farms for feeding it’s own people. All the work is done by Chinese workers as they don’t trust the uneducated locals. It’s no surprise the the land has been sold for half nothing by corrupt governments. Not only are local farmers bring kicked off lands which have been in there family for years but they can’t even get jobs on the new farms. I think it was in time magazine I read the article on this. In 30 years land for food will be more important than oil

At $5,000+ angola is ten times richer than the poorest African States, effectively a middle income – albeit low middle income – county. Good luck to them. With the long term growth rate of some subsaharan African states being much nigher than Europe’s, some will be richer than the poorest European States in our lifetime.

I just finished reading a book by Henning Mankell called “The man from Beijing”. The story involved the chinese building cities in Africa and populating them with chinese workers. I thought it was fiction??

All I hear for God knows when is poor Africa.These countries are rich in resources and it’s about time they got their act together and no more begging bowls.Stop dancing and start working Africa.

The title is incorrect. It’s not in the middle of the country. The title gets you the impression that its out in the middle of “no where’. The reason it’s a ghost town is the condos were priced way too high for the local population and they did not have any system set up any bank loans. Also the people who could easily afford were not buying because the highway linking it to downtown Luanda has not been completed which would make the trip less than 20 minutes by car. Also the per capita that was quoted tends to be mis-leading when it comes to african countries. If you just look at the people who live in the CITY of Luanda the per capita is more like 18, 000 not 5,144. Factoring in the people who live in the country side who are not drawing an income who live strictly off the land, that drives down the over all per capita. But the people in the country side are not the issue, it’s the people who live in the city are the issue here. All they have to do is complete the highway, lower the price of the condos and established bank loans for those that qualify and rent some of the units as low income housing. It’s an easy fix. They were stupid for pricing them that high in the first place because the stupid government does not understand realstate. The price of housing is based on the ability of what the locals can pay. Yes it’s good the condos are of high quality but if the locals can’t afford it the condos need to be repriced accordingly. What a bunch of freaking idiots.

A intellegent way to concour D Land, they probably are checking it for oil and zink, covering all areas; just before they move in. The longer they leave it before they move in; the more land they will buy, as it would become dearer with population. They have it all worked out I see, lets hope they keep friendly with us and be good neighbours.
