Galway hospital board chairman apologises to Praveen Halappanavar for Savita's death

Noel Daly also moved to reassure the public that the hospital has implemented all of the interim recommendations.

THE CHAIRMAN OF the board responsible for University College Hospital Galway has apologised to the husband of Savita Halappanavar for his wife’s death.

Noel Daly, chairman of the board of the Galway and Roscommon University Hospital Group, spoke to RTÉ news tonight, where he apologised to Praveen Halappanavar and family for the death of Savita, who passed away in October of last year.

Daly also moved to reassure the public that the hospital has already implemented all of the interim recommendations made in a report into Savita’s death.

He told RTÉ that some staff are out on leave for stress-related reasons, and that some had received “threats” in the wake of Savita’s death.

Savita Halappanavar was 31 years of age and pregnant with her first child when she presented for treatment at University College Hospital in Galway with pains. She died a week later, after miscarrying, and contracting E. coli, leading to septic shock.

The review into the handing of the Savita’s case found that “inadequate assessment and monitoring” were contributory factors in her death from septic shock following an E.coli infection on 28 October last.
