  • It’s a pity a distinction can’t be made between genuine missing person cases who may be at serious risk and “runaways” who are more often than not staying with a friend after getting annoyed with a parent or guardian who the guards are still obliged to investigate as a missing person.

It’s a pity that these youngsters fail to realise or simply ignore the worry they put their families through, and the Garda resources they waste by disappearing without any word and on their own accord.

Great that he has been located safe and well, but don’t treat the issue with kid gloves. Putting your family through an ordeal like this is a selfish and thoughtless thing to do.

    • Teenagers are and will forever be self centred in their aspect. Thats the way of the world. it is precisely this lack of maturity in working out what and who are acting in their best interests that makers them incredibly vulnerable to outside influences not all of them good. when they run away for whatever reason society has a duty to find them and return them to where they.are safe.

    • Selfish and thoughtless deeds can result in tragedy. Judgmental attitudes do not help – understanding does. Certain ages in human development bring their own crises and not all are obvious and easily understood.
Ireland has a obscene level of suicide and homelessness and traditional attitudes must change.

  • Are we really so cold that we “can’t be bothered” with something so serious as a missing person report- unless there is a certainty that it’s a “legit case of sorts” if you don’t have the interest or time to read the article… Then don’t! The rest of us can equally choose to do so or not. I think, that in the event of a missing person, this is exactly the right place to get the information out there- asap- to a wide audience & with a photo of the person in question. Imagine the terror, the panic, the desperation of the mother / father / sister / brother /husband/ wife etc etc. Well done Journal!! Keep it up!
God bless any families missing a loved one.

  • These stories are great to hear.
Though, I’ll have to throw my two cents into this comment.
It seems to be a rare occurrence to see an ‘adult’ on a missing peoples post.

Yet, when an adult goes missing you can be fairly sure more often than not that it’s a pretty grim outlook.
Yes, teenagers and so do get kidnapped, happened quite recently to a friend of a friend (6 degrees after all…)
Though, I still can’t help feel a little annoyed at the ones who just ran away.

Now, they are kids after all so this will happen but without a reprimand it will happen a bit too often.

It’s a tricky enough subject I guess.. but my vote would be on the side to ‘waste’ resources looking for people than to just forget about em, after all we were all daft kids once! :D
Boy cried wolf springs to mind anyway.

    • I agree. It takes just one child to slip through and end up in some miserable position unprotected or worse end up dead as in the case of that poor daniel macanaspie. One is too many in my opinion. These kids are vulnerable for wotever reason.
