Poll: Are you ok with the corporate sponsorship of venues?

Necessary evil? Unforgivable? Or just a name?

BY NOW, WE’RE used to calling venues by their sponsorship short-hands.

The O2, the Aviva and the Bord Gais Energy Theatre are just a couple of examples.

The Bord Gais Energy Theatre has been put up for sale today and was previously known as the Grand Canal Theatre.

When it was renamed, there was some scepticism, but since the renaming, the world has continued to turn and people have continued to show up to see plays and musicals.

So are the occasional storms over naming rights a minor one? Is it important what the name is? Does a venue by any other name smell as sweet?

We’re asking: Are you ok with the corporate sponsorship of venues?

Poll Results:

Yes, it doesn't matter (1634)
No, it cheapens the place (1335)
Only if it's needed to keep the place open (919)
Why is this poll not about Garth Brooks? (721)
I don't know (62)

Read: The Bord Gais Energy Theatre is on sale for €20m
