A MAN HAS been arrested and a firearm seized in north Dublin, Gardaí say.

Officers who were on the beat on Fitzgibbon Street near the North Circular Road yesterday evening stopped and searched a vehicle at around 5pm.

They seized a firearm and a number of implements before arresting the sole occupant of the car, a 25-year-old man, who was  taken to Mountjoy Garda Station.

He was later released from custody and Gardaí say that a file is now being prepared for the Director of Public Prosecutions.

  • lads the law is quite straightforward on this and maybe facts should gave been checked first.

It is only considered a firearm if capable of firing a projectile at above 1 joule of energy. Below that it is considered a toy.

  • He was not arrested and it was an AIRSOFT pistol. A BROKEN AIRSOFT pistol. This is atrocious journalism and scaremongering.

  • It was an airsoft handgun, unassembled and not in working order. A TOY.

  • Subject to the gun being unregistered and illegal I don’t get the fact he was released. It must have been a good excuse ” I was just looking after it for someone”. probably. He should be remanded straight away and brought to a special sitting of court. There should be amandatory sentence for being in possession of a firearm. As a law abiding member of society with children I feel nervous and somewhat frightened about the perceived normality of having guns in Ireland it is no longer shocking. That leads to a level of acceptance by the government and Gardai which means they work on a acceptable percentage of unregistered guns on the streets as apposed to zero tolerance. There should be a minimum sentence of 6 years without parole. Carrying a knife without a valid reason should be treated in much the same way. My wife took my daughter to the local library she is 4 years old she ran over to my wife and said that boy over there had a knife and sure enough a young boy no older then 8 had a kitchen knife haveway out his sleeve in a public library. What is going on in the world.

  • She told the library attendant gathered the 4 year old and the 1 year old asleep in the buggy and left. I don’t know any mother that would try and disarm an eight year old with a knife. This happened in Marino Library. Self preservation would be the most important issue. I am 6ft and feel that I can look after myself but even I would not approach an eight year old with a kitchen knife that has no comprehension of right or wrong or remorse.

  • And why exactly is this man being prosecuted? For owning a firearm?
Isn’t it everyone’s Right to be able to defend themselves? Unless that man was acting in a threatening way or in a manner that would suggest that the firearm was for something other than personal safety then he should have been left alone, his privacy and property respected. He most certainly should NOT be facing a bogus legislative charge.

    • With more and more people being attacked on the streets or in their own homes anyone that has a firearm stashed for self defence is totally right as far as I am concerned. The criminal element in this country already have guns and knives. We are expected to rely on Peace Keepers that only turn up when the damage is done.
