Man arrested and bailed in Jimmy Savile inquiry

The man being questioned is in his 70s.

POLICE IN LONDON have arrested a third man as part of an investigation into sexual abuse claims made against the late television star Jimmy Savile.

Officers working on Operation Yewtree – the name given to the formal inquiry into the large number of allegations – said they arrested a man in his 70s at about 7.15am today.

The Cambridgeshire man was taken into police custody on suspicion of sexual offences before being bailed until a date in December.

The Metropolitan Police said the suspect falls under the strand of the investigation they have termed ‘others’. When launching the operation, Commander Peter Spindler said it would examine all alleged sexual exploitation by the late BBC presenter, as well as a number of others.

Police believe that Savile may have abused up to 300 people over four decades.

This man, who is yet to be named, is the third arrested since the investigation began. Gary Glitter was the first to be detained and questioned. He has since been released on bail until mid-December. Freddie Starr was also arrested earlier this month in connection with the investigation. He was questioned for a number of hours before being released.
