SEVEN MEN WILL appear before courts around the country today charged in connection with a major drugs operation uncovered by Gardaí.

Around 5,800 cannabis plants worth an estimated €4.6 million were seized in co-ordinated raids across the country yesterday as part of an ongoing investigation into cannabis cultivation.

Four of the men charged will appear before Longford District Court at 10.30am this morning. Two others will appear before Drogheda District Court later this morning while the sixth will be brought before Gorey District Court.

An eighth man who was also arrested yesterday remains in custody in Mullingar Garda Station.

The largest of the seizures took place in an industrial unit in Longford where Gardaí discovered around 1,700 cannabis plants with an estimated street value of €1.36 million.

The other seizures took place in commercial premises and industrial units in Athlone, Drogheda Business Park, Kiltimagh in Mayo and Campile in Wexford.

  • Arrested yesterday, in court today.
Some weeks back three men tied up and robbed an old lady, got caught and were released in the morning.
File sent to the dpp etc.
It’s hard to belive this country is being run by adults.
Why is growing a plant worse than assulting a granny.

  • waste of time, money and dwindling resources. Regulate, educate and tax the shit out of it. Or are the global alcohol and tobacco lobbyists too tightly ingrained with the older generation who run most western countries to let that happen?

  • Wait a minute, 800 euros a plant!
Either someone’s telling lies or we all need to get growing.

    • morning Little Jim, did you have a nice sleep, how does it feel to have woken up there lad?? Imagine the money certain people are being paid to grant the licence for medical cannabis here in Ireland in 2013. the government are actually sidestepping the need to test the drug here and letting it go straight onto the shelves, all this when it’s been called such a dangerous drug for over 50 years!!

  • 4.5 million .so if it were to become legal would not a good chunck of that go torwards tax. No need to cut the respite grant.whats the difference in alcohol and weed really. I see more trouble around drink than weed. Alcohol does more damage to your body than weed does.if only the irish goverment would open their minds into the benifits of legalizing weed.

  • the tobacco companies have been buying huge tracts of land in the US so when the other states legalise they will all of a sudden be cannabis growers too. it’s all been a lie for over 50 years that cannabis is really harmful!! wake up

if you think you haven’t been lied to well then, why is it there’s a licence about to be granted to GW Pharmacy here in Ireland where they’ll be selling THC EXTRACT (not synthesised THC but actual extract!!) to MS sufferers, It’s funny now that certain people are being paid off that a plant with no supposed medical uses for over 50 years has now got sudden medical qualities!! People are so gullible

  • Ireland needs to look at Canberra. it’s legal for anyone to grown 2 plant’s so it cuts out the drug gangs using the profits for guns ,any dealing is very low level ie, friends sorting friends out . there is no Amsterdam style cafes so no drug tourism attracting other harder drugs and above all the police aren’t wasting time on money on a poxy plant!

Latest figures indicate that you pay €78,000 per year that someone is in prison. Think about that next time we’re locking people up for plants.

  • The “War on drugs” has failed utterly. Let 2013 be the year we rethink our strategy on this. Breaking the Taboo is an interesting new documentary backed by Richard Branson, Morgan Freeman, and former US presidents Bill Clinton and Jimmy Carter. Watch the trailer;
