Leo Varadkar wore a pair of novelty maple leaf socks when meeting Justin Trudeau

He might have been having a dig at the Canadian PM, who is partial to novelty socks himself.

TAOISEACH LEO VARADKAR is meeting with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau at Farmleigh House in Dublin’s Phoenix Park.

It’s the first official visit to Ireland by a foreign leader since Varadkar was elected Taoiseach and, as we wrote yesterday, he’s keen to make a good impression.

Every detail is being looked after to ensure that the meeting goes well, the benches in the Phoenix Park are even getting lick of paint.

But An Taoiseach has gone one step further than rolling out the red carpet, he’s wearing red socks (Canada’s colour of course) with mounties and maple leaves.

Three weeks after attempting to charm Downing Street with a reference to Love Actually, Varadkar now seemingly has his sights set on the North Americans.

In fairness to Varadkar, it could also be a bit of a dig at Trudeau. The Canadian PM is known for statement socks himself and was spotted wearing a Star Wars pair when he met Enda Kenny in Ottawa on ‘Star Wars Day’, May the Fourth.
