PRESIDENT MICHAEL D Higgins met with the former Brazilian president Lula yesterday as he continued his two-week South America visit.
The President met with Lula, who left office nearly two years ago, following his arrival in Sao Paulo yesterday morning and presented him with a Republic of Ireland jersey before posing for photos and holding talks through an interpreter.
There was no confirmation that Higgins requested if Lula could do a job on the left wing for Ireland against Germany this Friday.
Higgins is due to meet with incumbent president Dilma Rousseff, who succeeded Lula in January of last year, later today. He will depart for Argentina on the final leg of his trip on Thursday.
