ASYLUM APPLICATIONS in the EU-28 were up 29% in the first quarter of this year, new figures show.

A total of 108,300 applications have been made in the first three months of 2014, compared to 87,575 in 2013, according to Eurostat.

Almost 27,000 of these were from Syria.

Ireland received 290 applications, up 75.

Germany took in the most applications at 36,890, followed by France with 15,885.

“With over 15 000 more asylum applicants in Q1 2014, Germany accounts for more than 60 per cent of the overall increase at the EU level compared to Q1 2013,” the report reads.

Of the more than 21,000 decisions made in Germany in the first three months of this year, 62% were rejected, and just 27% granted refugee status. France accepted just 17%, with 4% receiving subsidiary protection.
