big river rising

This doesn't bode well for an already flooded Athlone...

River Shannon levels remain high today and there’s more rain on the way.

RIVER LEVELS IN Athlone remained high today, following rain over the weekend, with some flooding in the town centre and surrounding areas.

Met Éireann has issued a yellow weather warning and the latest rainfall radar is not very encouraging:

Today Athlone Town Council said river levels remain high but that flooding to low lying houses has not occurred.

“Based on the current weather forecast, the Council is expecting river levels to stabilise in or around current levels over the next five days,” town clerk Pat Keating said today. “However, the situation will be kept under constant review and a further update will issue if the situation changes significantly.”

Rail services

Flooding in certain parts of the country also affected transport services and Iarnróid Éireann cancelled the 4pm service between Connolly and Sligo today because of “extreme weather conditions”. The line between Dromod and Carrick-Shannon is also being served by a bus transfer with some delays.

With widespread heavy showers forecast over the next two days, we wouldn’t suggest you bring in the sandbags just yet…
