Man charged after ATM ripped from supermarket

He will appear in court today.

A MAN WILL appear before a special sitting of Monaghan District Court this afternoon at 2.30pm charged in connection with the recovery of an ATM.

The ATM was stolen from a supermarket in Newry in the early hours of yesterday and detectives in Drumass, Monaghan came across a white transit van with three men nearby. The men fled on foot, leaving the van behind. One, aged in his 20s, was arrested near the scene.

He was taken to Carrickmacross Garda Station and later charged.

Inside the van, gardaí found an ATM. A forensic examination of the van and its contents is under way.

The search for the other two men is continuing, with the assistance of a number of other garda units.

Gardaí said the van was uncovered by gardaí who were patrolling under the new Operation Thor, which is targeting the country’s most prolific burglars.
