Aung San Suu Kyi to visit Ireland next month

The Burmese pro-democracy leader is planning her first trip outside of her country in 24 years.

AMNESTY INTERNATIONAL IRELAND has confirmed that Aung San Suu Kyi, the Burmese pro-democracy leader, is to visit Ireland next month.

It’s understood that the visit may take place on 18 June. It’s likely that Suu Kyi will only be in the country for the day as she also fits in visits to Oslo in Norway and the UK.

A spokeperson for the Department of Foreign Affairs told TheJournal.ie that the visit will not be a state event because she is not a head of state, but because of Suu Kyi’s international standing the department will be involved.

An Amnesty spokesperson said that the date and planned events have not been finalised.

This Irish visit will form part of Aung San Suu Kyi’s first visit outside Burma in 24 years. She was recently granted a passport to allow her to travel, following her detention under house arrest from 20 July 1989 to 13 November 2010.

Earlier this month she was sworn into Burma’s military-backed parliament, taking public office for the first time since launching her struggle against authoritarian rule.
