It's over: Blaze at Ballymount recycling plant extinguished after five days

It has prompted a government review of the storage of toxic materials near homes.

AFTER ALMOST A week, the fire at a recycling plant in west Dublin has been extinguished.

The blaze at the Oxigen plant in Ballymount was first reported to emergency services in the early hours of Saturday morning. 75 firefighters were tackling the fire at its height.

Government TDs praised their work and their prompt response to the incident.

Locals reported hearing small explosions when the fire first broke out, which could be heard as far away as Crumlin Garda Station.

They were told by authorities to keep windows and doors shut as it was feared smoke from the fire could be toxic.

It could be seen in many areas of the city, and although high winds helped disperse this smoke,  it was declared a  ‘Category 1′ incident by the Environmental Protection Agency.

Policy review

This has now prompted the government to review the policies surround the storage of hazardous materials near homes.

The incident now be the subject of three investigations by fire services, Gardaí, and the Environmental Protection Agency.

Dublin Fire Brigade confirmed this morning that no tenders are at the scene.
