IT WAS SUGGESTED in the Dáil yesterday that Ireland should have a new bank holiday.

The holiday would fall on 23 May and commemorate the passing of the same-sex marriage referendum this year.

Speaking in the Dáil yesterday, Sinn Féín’s Padraig MacLochlainn read a letter that had been sent to him:

“In a hundred years time, 23 May will be seen as not Ireland’s but one of humanity’s, proudest moments, because it was a day when equality conquered fear.

“Perhaps 23 May should become a bank holiday and called Equality Day?”

Ireland currently has nine public holidays, one more than the UK, one fewer than the US and nine fewer than India.
