BBC commentator comes under fire for Chinese accent

Mitch Fenner made the gaff during the World Gymnastics Championships.

A BBC COMMENTATOR has found himself facing criticism after seemingly impersonating a Chinese accent.

This happened during the broadcaster’s coverage of the World Gymnastics Championships, which commentator and coach Mitch Fenner was working on.

At one point, the camera panned to two Chinese supporters cheering and raising the country’s national flag in the crowd.

This prompted Mitch Fenner, who has been a long-time commentator with the station and is head coach of the Dutch gymnastics team, to say in seemed to be a Chinese accent:

Oh wow, they say, look at that, we’re from China.

The Telegraph is reporting that the BBC has acknowledged the accent could have been deemed offensive and that the commentator had been reprimanded for it.

In a tweet yesterday, he commented on how lucky he was to both be coaching a gymnastics team and to be working as a commentator.
