Outrage after video shows passers-by watching man beating woman in hotel

The victim is accosted by an apparently drunken man while other guests and even hotel staff walk blithely past.

SECURITY CAMERA VIDEO of a woman being attacked in the hallway of a Beijing hotel has sparked outrage over the failure of witnesses to aid the victim.

Video of the incident at the Heyi Hotel first spread online and has since been shown repeatedly on state broadcaster CCTV.

In it, the victim, identified only by the online name Wan Wan, is accosted by an apparently drunken man while other guests and even hotel staff walk blithely past.

He grabs her by the throat and throws her to the ground twice.

The hotel’s management apologised following an outcry online and a suspect was arrested in Henan province south of Beijing.

Officials and social commentators have long despaired over the unwillingness of some Chinese to help others or intervene in disputes, often based on a fear of being held responsible for the outcome.
