You might never have to worry about turning off the immersion again*

THERE’S NO QUESTION that strikes fear into the heart of an Irish person worse than: “Did you turn off the immersion?”

Thoughts of €250,000,000 bills float before your eyes as you picture the sheer cheek of yourself swanning around in your towel and forgetting to flip the switch.

Well now. Leave it to the Web Summit to come up with the answer to this age-old conundrum. A company called Belkin has created WeMo, which enables you to control devices in your home using your smartphone… and they’re only in talks with people about bringing this jiggerypokery to your immersion too.

Hurrah!

Belkin’s marketing manager, Ciaran Hannon said that WeMo is a “way to make devices in your home become smart, using an app on your smartphone that you can control remotely”.

You can also use ‘rules’, where you can decide whether you want to turn the light on and off, or whether you want the coffee on when your alarm goes off, using your phone.

But what about the immersion? Will that be able to be controlled?

“At some point yes,” said Ciaran.

“We’re working on partners that will use our technology and our layer to make products like an immersion meter be that smart. We’re in talks with a lot of companies about it.”
