Betfair offers free turkeys for Budget Day

The betting company gave away petrol and Christmas trees in previous years, but this year it is giving away… turkeys.

IT GAVE AWAY petrol and Christmas trees in previous years, and now Betfair has decided to mark Budget Day by giving out… free turkeys.

Ironically, there was a live turkey, Dustin, on hand to announce the giveaway. But why are Betfair giving away free turkeys? According to the company, it is a way to ‘beat the Budget blues’.

Betfair will take over the Dublin city-centre butcher shop owned by Peter Byrne at 91 Lower Camden Street today, from where 150 Irish born and bred turkeys will be given to the first 150 members of the public who arrive at the premises from 12.30pm.

The free turkeys have a recommended retail price of €60 each. Dustin the Turkey commented:

I’m just here to protest really. What a disgrace it is that the eating of poultry is trivialised in such a manner.  If it was up to me, I’d let them eat Christmas cake…poultry power…Turkey Ár Lá.

Betfair spokesman Barry Orr described the giveaway as a “win-win” as it supports Irish turkey suppliers as well as consumers.
