Body of missing fisherman recovered from Lough Ree

Darryl Burke had been missing since 20 March after the boat he and two other men were travelling in capsized.

THE BODY OF a fisherman missing for more than two weeks has been recovered from Lough Ree.

The search for Darryl Burke had begun on 20 March after the fishing boat he and two other men were in capsized on Lough Ree as it travelled to Carnagh from Hodson Bay in Athlone. The three men, all from Armagh, had been angling on the lake.

The two other men were rescued from the water but one later died in hospital.

Divers from Boyne Fishermen’s Rescue and Recovery Service recovered the body in 5 metres of water in an area of the lake known as The Wall just after 2.30pm this afternoon.

The body was found by volunteer divers Christopher McGinty and Richard Moore close to the area where the men’s boat had been discovered last Tuesday, about 50 metres from the shore.

A large number of organisations had been involved in the search over the past fortnight.
