Army renders safe third historic grenade in last seven days

This time the device was found at a commercial premises in Roscommon.

THE ARMY HAS rendered safe its third historic grenade of the week today after being called to a commercial premises in Ardnanagh, Roscommon, this afternoon.

The ‘Mills Type Grenade’ dates back to the early 20th century and was found by a worker while carrying out excavation work. The bomb disposal team arrived at 12.30pm where they examined the grenade in situ and then moved it to a secure location for a controlled explosion.

The scene was declared safe at 1pm. This is the 18th call out for bomb disposal teams this year and the third involving historic grenades in the last seven days. Just yesterday, the same type of grenade was found in Balyshannon in Donegal.

A spokesperson for the Defence Forces told TheJournal.ie that these types of devices usually date back to the War of Independence, hidden in gardens or ditches.

“It’s reasonably common but they’re still quite dangerous,” they said.
