Houses evacuated after viable bomb discovered by gardaí

The device was found during a garda search of a building in Edgeworthstown, Co Longford.

SEVERAL HOUSES WERE evacuated and an army bomb disposal team was called to respond to the scene after a viable bomb was found at a house in Edgeworthstown, Co Longford this afternoon.

The device was found during a garda search of the building.

According to the Defence Forces, its team arrived at the scene at 1pm this afternoon.

Road closures had already been put in place, and a safety cordon placed around the scene.

“The device was removed from the scene to a greenfield site nearby where it was rendered safe by controlled explosion,” a Defence Forces statement said.

Remnants of the device will now be handed over to gardaí, as they conduct an investigation.

The all clear was given at 1.45pm.
