50 bomb disposal call-outs this year - 34 fewer than last year

The most recent call-out was at the weekend, when a device was found in Tallaght.

THERE HAVE BEEN 50 callouts for the Army Bomb Disposal Team so far this year, 34 fewer than last year.

A total of 22 of the callouts were to viable Improvised Explosive Devices (IED’s).

Last year, the total callouts in same period came to 84, with 28 being to viable IEDs.

The main place for callouts was the Dublin region, with the number for this area amounting to 24 – 16 of which were to viable IEDs.

It’s not just IEDs that the bomb disposal team deals with – other types of call outs include munition destruction such as old grenades discovered by members of the public, unstable chemicals and also suspect devices found to be hoaxes.

This weekend, on 20 April, the army bomb disposal team made safe a viable IED in Jobstown, Tallaght.

The team went to the area following a request from the gardaí. The device had been found outside a home in the Glenshane area by a member of the public.

A cordon and road closures were put in place for public safety, and some houses were evacuated. The device was made safe and brought to a military location for further examination.
