Homes evacuated in south Dublin after discovery of viable bomb

The device was made safe at the scene by a bomb disposal team and gardaí are now investigating the incident.

AN ARMY BOMB disposal team rendered safe a viable improvised explosive device (IED) in Tallaght, Dublin, this evening.

The Defence Forces deployed the team in response to a request from gardaí after a suspect device was found at a private residence in the Deerpark area.

A cordon and road closures were put in place for public safety, while a number of nearby houses were evacuated.

The device was made safe at the scene without the need for a controlled explosion and was brought to a safe military location for further examination. All component parts and items of an evidential nature will be handed over to the gardaí to assist them with their investigation into the incident.

The scene was declared safe at 8.30pm.
