Censorship board bans book for the first time since 1998

It includes graphic descriptions of a child being raped.

A BOOK HAS been banned in Ireland for the first time in 18 years.

The Raped Little Runaway by Jean Martin was banned on the grounds of indecency or obscenity, as set out in the Censorship of Publications Act.

Following a meeting on 1 March the Censorship of Publications Board decided to prohibit the sale and distribution of the book.

The decision was set out in the latest edition of state publication Iris Oifigiúil.

Chairman Shane McCarthy told the Irish Independent the five-person board unanimously voted to ban the book due to its graphic descriptions of a child being raped.

He said it was the first book banned here since 1998.
