IN ONE OF his final acts as finance minister Brian Lenihan has appointed his economic advisor to the Central Bank commission.

Dr Alan Ahearne had been Lenihan’s special advisor since March 2009, taking leave from his post as a lecturer in economics at NUI Galway.

He had previously worked as a senior economist on the board of the US Federal Reserve for seven years.

Ahearne was appointed by Lenihan two years ago  in response to the economic and financial crisis and advised the minister on economic, budgetary and financial policy.

In a statement on the department of finance website, Lenihan said that Ahearne was “exceptionally well qualified” to serve on the commission for the next four years.

It is the sixth and final appointment made by Lenihan with two more members to be appointed to the commission by the new finance minister.

Ahearne will serve alongside governor Patrick Honohan, financial regulator Matthew Elderfield, head of the central bank Tony Grimes and department of finance secretary general Kevin Cardiff as well as other appointees John Fitzgerald, Max Watson, Michael Soden, Des Geraghty and Blanaid Clarke.
