Bruton in push to create 20,000 more factory jobs

The Minister has established a forum which it’s hoped will help drive job creation in the manufacturing sector.

MINISTER RICHARD BRUTON has announced a forum of experts tasked with developing policy to create 20,000 new jobs in the manufacturing sector.

Senior executives, academics and State agency officials will come together to discuss the best ways of driving employment in the area.

The forum will enable a “frank and open exchange of views” between industry and Government, a statement from the Department of Jobs and Enterprise said, adding that the manufacturing sector employs 230,000 people today.

The positions are part of the 100,000 new roles the Government aims to generate as part of its Action Plan on Jobs. Minister Bruton said:

We have a strong base of high-end, world-leading multinational manufacturing companies operating in a range of sectors – we must aspire to replicate the success of international examples.

He added that manufacturing is “a key driver of innovation and technological advance” that “generates many additional secondary jobs”.

The Action Plan for Jobs set out the ambition to have 100,000 more people in work by 2016, of which 20,000 are to come from manufacturing. I am convinced that the set of actions I have announced today will be the start of ensuring that we retain and create the jobs in manufacturing that we need.

The expert forum includes officials from Enterprise Ireland, the IDA and Forfas, and businesspeople from the pharmaceutical, engineering and food industries.

  • Dear Minister, instead of a ‘push’ to create 20,000 jobs, why doesn’t fine gael use one of the billion euro payments it keeps making to unguaranteed, unsecure bondholders and actually bloody CREATE 20,000 jobs themselves taking construction workers off the dole to finish off viable ghost estates, which can then be used as rental homes for young couples, providing an ongoing revenue stream for the state??

Oh, thats right. Doesn’t fit in with the austerity dictat from germeny.

  • Can i ask who is going to pay for this forum ? … Yes thats what I thought …. the taxpayer. The cost of paying this ‘panel of experts’ would surely cover the cost of employing more people that are needed on the frontline like nurses, special need teachers etc. As a taxpayer I am sick of paying for tribunals, forums , white papers, green papers…………….

Maybe he is trying to ensure that there is a job waiting for himself when his term of office is up ….. Something tells me he is going to need it!!!!!!

Since they have come to power, unemployment has risen from 14.1% to 15%…Not to mention the 4000+ per month who have emigrated or those stuck on a Slavebridge job, or taken out of the equation and hidden on a FAS or similar course somewhere!!!

    • All this up-beat talk from the replies here amazes me…Our political liars in the Regional Bundestag office in Dublin come out with continual soundbites, and people soak it up like piranhas in a feeding frenzy of positivitiy.

Well thats just pathetic, this bunch of Clowns are continually being found out on the lies they regurgitate day after day…Their have u-turned on every policy they had in the manifesto for govt, they have reneged on every promise made…!!!

They do now however tag along on the coat tails of Spain & Italy saluting Frau Merkels EU/Euro Axis and hoping for the odd crumb to fall off the table…!!!

Well people are sick & tired of the constant bullology spouted by this lot. Anything they announce is now taken as pure lies & spin…They have done more damage to the people and the economy of this country than FF did in their lifetime….!!!

They have been found out for what they are…A lying, spineless, disgraceful bunch of self serving morons, supporting the Financial elite, who line their pockets year in year out….!!!

“A rather vicious cycle has been at work for years. Reduced taxes on
the rich leave them with more money to influence politicians and
politics. Their influence wins them further tax reductions, which gives
them still more money to put to political use. When the loss of tax
revenue from the rich worsens already strained government budgets, the
rich press politicians to cut public services and government jobs and
not even debate a return to the higher taxes the rich used to pay. So it
goes – from Washington, to Wisconsin, to New York City.”
―Richard Wolff How the rich soaked the rest of us Guardian March 1 2011

Applies to our Crowd of liars as much as any other Govt…!!!

    • I agree. Bruton has not created 1 job, and never will. This announcement is a PR exercise. So he is putting together a group who will advise on the best ways to create 20,000 jobs in manufacturing.
He has put together a similar group for SMEs who provided a report, but no jobs. No doubt next move will be a group to advise on construction jobs, again we will pay for a report. But no jobs !!!

@ PeeedOff – Whoops, you’ve finally overplayed your hand. The “shouty shouty borderline racist I’m so edgy” routine’s run its course, I’m afraid. No longer funny and no longer smart. Time for a new alter-ego.

  • Any job creation is a good news. Instead of complaining peeed off I suggest go and get stuffed.

    • I think you need to seek more council from Gandalf there Boromir

There hasn’t been any “job creation”. There haven’t been any jobs created!! This is an announcement that a panel will be formed to see how best to create jobs. Why wasn’t this done as soon as FG got into power? couldn’t have anything to do with the recent unemployment figures that are touching 15% now could it?

To an unemployed person this announcement is about as useful as Hobbit in battle. Talk is cheap….

I’m tired of people thinking that faith in this system will somehow repair the cracks in its foundation. There is no way to “will” jobs into existence with positivity. Only a job creation scheme based on putting the people above the banks will create decent and lasting jobs!

  • It is not the obligation of any Government o create jobs, it is however expected the Government contribute to the environment in which jobs can be created. In regards to this specific article, one only has to think back a short while to remember the last Government barely if ever mention anything about creating jobs. I welcome continued efforts to bring people together to discuss theses new ways of creating jobs.

  • Reduce the cost of employment i.e. Employers PRSI. Reduce the legislative burden on employers.

    • And where would you propose to get the money for this…perhaps by reducing unemployment benefit by the same amount?

    • Mark lower the cost of employing people, benefits achieved 1.More people at work, more income tax, usc, income tax.2.Less social welfare paid out.3.More vat and excise leading to more employment in service sector. But you knew all this before you commented didn’t you?

    • The usual amount of positivity there Rob. Should the government try nothing and just keep increasing taxation. Don’t know about you, but I think the 20,000 people who could be working if this works would be happy enough.

  • This announcement could be spin. I suspect such talk shops about job creation have existed for a few years now and if they did not, why not? The only real news will be when the live register starts to improve.

    Reply
  • Now minister, if you could share them around the country and not to the usual 3 cities please

  • Nearly half a million on dole. Their attempt at creating jobs is only going to aim at helping 4% of those currently unemployed. And if this Govt say 20,000 jobs the really mean something like 2,000 to 3,000.
It’s like using a Band aid to try and heal a car crash victim. No where near good enough.

  • I have to say that the annoucement of any job creation is welcome BUT this is only an announcement of potential job creation !!! I will be happier when the numbers on the live register is reduced . I will treat this as I would any speculation and would rather wait and sere if any of the jobs materialise ….
